What does it mean to "pipe music"?

I am reading an article about plants responding to music. It says, "As early as 1957, Wisconsin florist Arthur Locker began piping music into his greenhouses" (The Secret Life of Plants) What does "piping music" mean? I would just like a simple explanation. Thanks, guys!
